Sahara Desert in Africa (source: iniborneo.com)

Have you ever heard about Sahara? or Taklimakan? or even Great Basin? Three of them are the largest deserts in the World. For me who live in tropical climate country area, to find deserts is little bit difficult. In Indonesia, actually has some places that can define as desert. The first is Gumuk Pasir Parangkusomo in Yogyakarta, then Bukit Pasir Berbisik in Bromo Mountain, etc.

Sahara

Talking about desert in the world, we can’t escape from talking about Sahara. Sahara is the largest desert in the world. It has around 9,000,000 sq km which located in Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Western Sahara, Sudan and Tunisia in Africa. The name of “Sahara” came from Arabian which means “the Great Desert”.

Sahara has some characteristics which different from other deserts/places in the world. It has an average annual rainfall in 7,6 (north) and 12,7 (south), then it has a warm daily temperature. Started from around 30 degrees in summer and 13 degrees in winter, but the highest recorded was 58 degree Celsius in summer. So hot, even I can’t imagine how would hot is that.

Taklimakan

After Sahara in Africa, we have the second largest desert in the world which is Taklimakan, in China. Taklimakan is located in south Xinjiang in northwest of China. It’s bounded by Kunlun Mountains, Pamir Mountain, and the Gobi desert.

Taklimakan has around 337,600 sq km. The average annual rainfall score is about 3,8 cm (west) and 1,0 cm (east). Then for the average score of temperature is around 25 degrees Celsius in Summer and -9 degrees Celsius in winter. The highest range is -26,1 degrees Celsius, it was the lowest record.

Great Basin Desert

The last one is Great Basin Desert in North America. The size is around 305,775 sq km and cover nearly all of Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and California, USA. There are many beautiful spots in there which used to a spot for weeding photograph.

The annual rainfall is around 5,1–51 cm. Then the temperature of it is around 30 degrees Celsius for Summer and -8 degrees Celsius for Winter. The highest record was 57 degrees Celsius, its almost same with Sahara.

Each of them has some different types. But most of them always has a extreme temperature or climate. So we have to be careful when we get there. We have to be ready with all of the situations. Happy Wednesday!
